The city is a heady mix of African, Islamic and modern architecture. The imposing arched doorways, carved pillars, ornately decorated domes and mesmerising mosaics give the city an exotic and seductive feel. The rich colours a stark contast against the desert ochre.
The mosaics have religious, as well as a decorative purpose. The tiles shapes, patterns and colours are representative. Their creation seen as an expression of faith.
The high city walls, fortified palaces and remnants of cannons remind us that the city was once a great military centre.
We sat outside and watched the sunset whilst the city shimmered with lantern light.
