The Ladies are culture mavens and we are looking forward to supporting the 2nd annual Buxton Spa Prize between now and its end in August. The Buxton Spa Prize was the brain child of Trevor Osborne last year to promote artists and artworks of Buxton and yesterday the second annual event was launched. We were invited to the Old Hall in Buxton, enjoyed a delicious glass of wine and told what we can look forward to at this year’s Buxton Spa Prize.
Last year fifty-five artists entered, seventy-three works were exhibited and seen by over eight-hundred visitors to the Newly located Green Man Gallery in Buxton. The Ladies Take On Launch Party was at the Green Man Gallery amidst the plethora of artistic works and we were stunned by the beauty of Buxton seen through so many different artists talents and the outstanding quality of the works. I mean it. I’m not just saying that. I wanted to buy a piece last year and this year a goal of mine is to save up and do so. Not only would I be supporting a local artist and a local event but I would also have a one-of-a-kind artwork of the beautiful Shire we Ladies love to improve the elegance of my home.
Haidee Jo Summers won First Prize last year but it is important to remember their were more than one category artists could enter – The Buxton Spa Prize, The Buxton Spa Sketchbook Prize, The Buxton Spa Young Artist Prize, The Buxton Spa Teen Prize and the Buxton Spa Children’s Prize. Entry fees range from 25 to 2 pounds and all ages can participate as the young artist prize is for ages 18-25, teen prize is for 11-17 and children’s prize is for eleven years and under.
Organizers of the event lamented that last year’s event lacked participation for the younger categories and it was an ardent goal of theirs to build awareness for 25 and under that they can enter the competition for some outstanding prizes. One of which is the Young Artist Prize which includes an automatic entry into the main prize and a five day visit to Osborne’s studio in Porthleven for an artistic session. The theme for the 25 and under age categories is “What I Like About Buxton”. Easy enough!
Discussion did erupt during the question period as how to get young people involved. The organizers are looking for volunteers, teachers, schools, parents, art teachers, etc to help them spread the word. If you feel you could help out in some way visit: www.BuxtonSpaPrize.co.uk
The Buxton Spa Prize launch also discussed Sponsorship opportunities for companies, communities and other creative groups to align with the event. The Buxton Festival has taken the opportunity to champion the Buxton Spa Prize and the two are intended to align during the Festival.
Entries are from April 1st until May 18th, work submission is from May 1st to the 5th of July. Judging will be on July 16th with a Literary Talk on the 17th to be followed by the exhibition which will run at the Green Man Gallery again from July 17th until August 31st.
