img_8038If you haven’t heard of Bestival previously, it is a festival held on the Isle of Wight and has been going for 12 years now. Started out by renegade Rob Da Bank (yeah, that’s a wicked name) and is a four day event that many a youth takes a pilgrimage to.

Honestly, I am no longer of the youth ilk and can broadly say the event struck my 1980s, 1990s and present day heart with a cacophony of musical talents from the likes of headliner – The Cure, to Craig David, Fatboy Slim, Years and Years as well as the epic Major Lazer.

img_8044Just escaping the main land and ascending towards a magical event amidst a mystical island had gregarious appeal to it almost immediately. We soon found kinship amongst fellow travelers and settled into a cozy spot in the green campsite, which was easily accessible and nicely tucked away from the chaos deeper within the heart of the festival.

img_8004Probably best to speak of the music first as it was a music festival foremost. I did have the good fortune to listen in on The Cure, Years and Years and Major Lazar amongst many others. The Cure seemed just OK as was Years and Years who’s voice seemed drowned out by the music.

Major LazerMajor Lazer melted our faces off with a brilliant spectacle but perhaps my favourite act of the festival – and to my great surprise – was Craig David TS5 who DJ’d and sang his own songs. Perhaps what was great about Craig David is the man gave 100% effort into his performance, which showed an enormous amount of respect to his audience. Gutted to say we had to leave on Sunday afternoon and missed Fatboy Slim at the Spaceport (my heart still bleeds over this) but I can only guess that was a show-stopping event.

img_8049Some of the best bits of Bestival were the times we wondered around aimlessly and discovered all the Ambient Forest had to offer – including the Amphitheatre with Bestiversity courses such as “The Future of Sex” but where fierce nights were hosted with Deaf By Disco or when Shitfaced Shakespeare had a overflowing audience howling with laughter.

Some of the other best bits of Bestival were when we wondered over to Slow Motion and partook in Hip Hop Yoga, had a bite to eat from the ladies in the WI Tent, checked out the world’s biggest bouncy castle or spent an evening watching the dancing circus unfold in Caravanserai.

img_4814Something uber-futuristic was the Samsung Hypercube where we got virtually up-close-and-personal with a Biffy Clyro performance.

img_8054Loved seeing non-headliners but spectacles in themselves – Mr. Motivator first thing in the morning on the Main Stage motivating everyone to exercise and be the best you can be (drenched in a downpour, this still made my day!) and the fire starters at the Ryde Extreme Fire Show who were young enough to be told not to play with fire but wise enough to show us all how to tame it with magnificent wizardry.

img_5019We ended up spending a considerable amount of time in the Bulmers Colourena. The space and characters within it were vibrant. The tools were simple, games, humour and an array of colours. We visited the coulourena every day. The place was just fun and entertaining without trying too hard.

img_4832We had covered Boomtown this year and do have to say the production value there was considerably higher. However, overall Bestival was a kaleidoscope of music, playfulness and fun-loving energy that picked us all up from or gloomy sepia existence in a tornado of chaos and landed us in the land of Oz with vibrancy, singing and otherworldliness. My quest for Fatboy Slim will continue but my musical dreams on the Isle of Wight were definitely met.
